JD: Your work often evokes imagery of extraterrestrials, with glowing lights in forests or objects emerging from the sky. What is your interest in other realms? TK: My background is in the occult, which has a rich history of trying to see beyond reality. Recently, that interest has metamorphosed into an interest in UFOs and consciousness studies. You and I… [have] our own bubble of reality. [They] rub up against and touch each other, and those intersections are really interesting to me. But [beyond that] there’s this “uber reality” that’s above us. We only sense that uber reality indirectly, the same way we sense light––through the feeling of heat––getting sunburnt… It is physical and of the world, but it’s not quite [here]. We are always moving between these realms, but we don’t sense them in an ocular or physical way. Our perception of that other reality is often limited to subtle sensations, like getting the creeps, or walking into a room and knowing instinctively that two people were just fighting. There are things that we interact with that we haven’t evolved to sense just yet, because they don’t appear on the familiar light waves. For you, creation is a way of reaching for the unknown. TK: Definitely. I start with a piece of paper completely blackened with graphite, and then I add a watercolor wash to create the tone. Then slowly I work to bring out the light, and that’s the step in the process that feels like I’m tapping into something beyond myself. I try not to have a clear idea of what I’m going to create beforehand because then it becomes a product rather than an exploration. I feel like I’m communicating with some off-world entity; but not like I know their name, or where they’re from, or their planet. It’s more like I’m in tune with something else. They’re working through me and I’m a conduit. I don’t feel like I fully own the drawings once they’re done. It consisted of two rooms, one green and one pink. It colored how she raised and protected her children, with ferocious love and one eye on the ticking timebomb in their brain chemistry. While Bipolar disorder drove the other women in our family mad, my mother kept me and my youngest sibling states away. Alluding to familial boogeymen and unexplained events that haunt the corners of our genetic nightmares, the demons and witches in Secondhand Smoke speak on the problem many female-identifying people must manage every day: Am I being a bitch right now? Am I angry because I’m PMSing or am I angry because I am experiencing injustice? The protestant reformation left a once strong religious/political institution splintered. Europe was emerging from a period of cold and famine called The Little Iceage. Once trials became known by the greedy and desperate, accusations of witchcraft were used to cleanse communities of undesirables: those with desirable land, those with empty bellies, those who looked at you the wrong way, and those with inconvenient mental illnesses. But regardless of an accuser’s personal motives, there was a general consensus that something was coming; The End. Armageddon. The suburban house was a reference to my own upbringing as a child growing up in Folsom, California, and then Carmel, Indiana. A fabrication all it’s own, the suburbs are insulation from the poverty and crime perceived to exist in both rural and urban environments. There is no other place GOODGIRL could be from. During the course of GOODGIRL, I performed both on the gallery and online. As a member of the first Facebook Generation, I grew up almost entirely online in online message boards like Gaia Online or on intimate blogs like LiveJournal or Tumblr. The 2012-2016 Tumblr Girl was my image of peak femininity and desirability in my early 20s. To this day, I still suffer from the indoctrination of aestheticized domestic violence and eating disorders. GOODGIRL told all of her secrets online. It lasted 3 months and was my first step into durational performance. I was strangely comfortable in the medium, as a young woman (23 at the time) accustomed to performing my personality from all angles. I organized several “happenings” over the course of this 3-month performance, recorded videos of my life living with Fleshbaby, but the true joy I experienced from it was simply going about my day in various states of adhesion to her body. Fleshbaby was created from the softest, hottest fleece I could find in my flesh tone on Oahu. I traced her outline myself and hand-sewed her together without a seam allowance to give her body a strange and misshapen appearance. At the time I was living in student housing and undergraduate students openly mocked me. I was called the R-word to my face several times. We attended gallery openings together, friends' birthday parties, and more. At concert venues, she would be inspected by security as if she could harbor some weapon or drugs. During this portion of the performance, Fleshbaby became more human. People referred to her lovingly, as if she were a shy child. This port of the performance lasted about a month, during which I developed a hunch that would become more noticeable in the coming weeks. In addition, it should be noted that I was so hot all of the time. During this time I journaled daily to track my feelings regarding our time apart. My hunch had developed to accommodate her and I noticed I overcompensated for her side when moving through doorways, around corners, and in lines at the grocery store. I felt cold all of the time even on 90-degree days. But the thing I felt most was lonely. When I touched her again, even after a few minutes, I felt safe and comforted. I was never going to be an astronomer because I find math really frustrating, but when I was little we lived in a town where you could see a lot of stars. My family and I sat out in lawn chairs on our driveway to watch them. When we left California for a suburban town in Indiana, where it was too cold for driveway sitting most of the year, my mom would walk my little brother and I over to the local high school to attend planetarium shows. The room would dim and the stars would move in front of us as we learned about constellations and deep space voyagers. When I think about being a child, I think about the world feeling so large and limitless. As we age, I think our world starts to feel so small. Our adult human problems swell and fill up our sense of expansiveness. In a place like New York City, it can be difficult return to that unknowable vastness, but I feel it when I lay out on my roof and stare at the moon, or the naughty feeling of standing in the center of the street at 4 am before everyone wakes up. So when I’m thinking of math and geometry in the universe, it has it’s place but it’s still based on an earthling perspective of reality. (And that’s okay! I am an earthling!) I’m very inspired by spirals, symmetry, and radial forms as divine structures that can scale in both directions. When I draw, those shapes often show up without me planning them, and I reinforce them once I trust their presence. God, I’m not sure what’s more sinister, the Dark Forest or the Human Zoo. For those unfamiliar, the Dark Forest theory suggests that the reason we haven’t encountered alien life is because intelligent civilizations are actively hiding. They fear a larger, more dangerous force in the universe, so they remain silent and invisible. Meanwhile, we’re out here shouting into the void with neon signs and radio waves, announcing a free buffet to the cosmos. Carl Sagan once said that humanity should behave like the new and emerging species it is by watching, listening, and learning.
